Sexual healthSexual health

We hope that your time at the University of Nottingham will be happy and healthy. Everyone arrives at university with different experiences and ideas about sex. For many it’s an:

  • exciting time
  • a time of personal development
  • experimentation
  • forming new and personal relationships
  • time to take responsibility for your own health

It’s important that students know how to look after their sexual health.

Sexual health definition

"The capacity and freedom to enjoy and express sexuality without:

  • fear of exploitation
  • oppression
  • physical or emotional harm

It’s not just about using contraception or avoiding infections"

Family Planning Association (FPA) 2004.

Good sexual health includes:

  • feeling good about yourself
  • having the knowledge, skills and ability to protect yourself and your partner against sexually transmitted infections/unwanted pregnancy
  • feeling comfortable about your sexual orientation and feeling accepted
  • being able to choose to have sex or not to have sex
  • being free from exploitation, oppression, physical or emotional harm

Sometimes things can get a little complicated and often sex is one of those subjects that isn’t discussed openly. The role of the Sexual Health Promotion Worker is to support students to look after and maintain their sexual health and to help promote a safe and inclusive university community.  The Sexual Health Promotion Worker for The University of Nottingham is Denise Eaves.

Denise is available on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 1:30pm -4:30pm. You can also make an appointment with her to register for free condoms. Please ring the Health Centre to make an appointment.
